Navigation Signals - VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range): Provides azimuth guidance by transmitting directional signals to aircraft, helping pilots determine their position relative to ground stations. - ILS (Instrument Landing System): Assists aircraft during approach and landing by transmitting precise vertical and horizontal guidance signals. - GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System): GPS and other satellite-based systems offer accurate positioning data, enhancing route planning and autopilot functions. 3. Surveillance and Tracking - Transponder Signals: Aircraft equipped with transponders respond to radar interrogations by transmitting identification, altitude, and speed data. Mode S transponders enable selective addressing and data exchange. - ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast): Aircraft broadcast GPS-derived position, velocity, and intent data to ground stations and other aircraft, improving situational awareness. 4. Emergency Signals - Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT): Automatically activates in a crash, transmitting distress signals on 121.5 MHz and 406 MHz to aid search and rescue operations. Challenges and Future Developments - Spectrum Congestion: Increasing air traffic demands efficient spectrum allocation to avoid interference. - Cybersecurity Risks: Secure encryption and authentication protocols are essential to protect communication integrity. - Next-Gen Systems: Future advancements include satellite-based communication (e.g., Iris program) and AI-driven air traffic management for enhanced efficiency.
